Facts About The Constellation Aries

The Aries constellation is spotted in the evening sky between Pisces and Taurus. It’s the least obvious constellation of the entire zodiac and has only two bright stars. Other stars and sky objects of the Aries constellation are deep and very dim. The two bright stars of the constellation are Hamal and Sheratan, the alpha and beta respectively. These two stars appear to be very close in the night sky. Aries was visualized by ancient astronomers especially the Greek as a resting Ram with its head turned slightly to the right. The alpha, beta, and gamma stars of the constellation mark the head and horns of the Ram. Sometimes it is also visualized as a running Ram.

In Greek mythology, the Ram is supposed to be the ferocious animal, which saves the kids Phrixus and Helles from death. The evil stepmother Ino decides to murder these two innocent kids when the Golden Fleece Ram comes to the rescue. Once Phrixus is whisked to Safety, he sacrifices the Ram to the gods and thus places it among the stars.

More Facts About The Constellation Aries

The first point of the Aries constellation indicates the Celestial meridian or the zero-point for the calculations of Right Ascension. It is this point where the Vernal Equinox happens every year when the Ecliptic and the Celestial Equator cross. Aries is the second smallest constellation of the zodiac. The two brightest stars in the Aries constellation are the Hamala and the Sheratan. Sheridan has a magnitude of 2.65 while Hamal is brighter with a magnitude of 2.0. Hamal is 60 light years away from the sun while Sheratan is 66 light years away. The third star which is closest to the sun is the Teegarden. Teegarden lies about 7.5 years away from the sun and has a magnitude of 15. Teegarden is a dim red dwarf of the constellation. This dwarf star moves at the speed of 5 arc seconds a year and surprisingly has the largest proper motions of a star.

Apart from stars and dwarf stars, the Aries Constellation has unconfirmed 5 extrasolar planets. Extrasolar planets are so-called because they revolve around other stars rather than the Sun. The best galaxy to view in the Aries constellation is supposed to be at the 11th magnitude. There is an asymmetry in this spiral galaxy which is otherwise dim.

In astrology, Aries is the first sign and starts the zodiacal New Year. Aries represents the start of spring. People born between March 22nd to April 20th are called the Arians and belong to the Aries sign. Aries is a cardinal fire sign and it very much influences the characters of the Arians. Aries are born leaders, very optimistic, and filled with Ideals. Their spirit will be something very similar to that of the spring season.
