Vedic astrology is the astrological science practiced in ancient India. It pervades everything about planetary positions and other celestial things. In earlier days, it dealt with movements of planets in respect to the stars. However, later on zodiac signs were added to it. In India, the native term for this is Jyotish which can barely be translated as heavenly body or source of light.

About Vedic Astrology

According to ancient Indian astrologers, there are twenty seven constellations which constitute twelve zodiacs, nine planets and twelve houses representing different phases of our everyday lives. According to the time of child birth, these signs are assigned to these planets and houses. This planetary position determines character, nature and future of the jatak or the new born of this phase of the year.

The most important demarcating line between western and ancient Indian astrology is set by the rule of Zodiac determination. Western astrological science employs Tropical motion where the Sun’s position in the equinox of Spring determines the Zodiac sign. On the other hand, Vedic science uses Sidereal movement in which planetary movements are determined against the position of stars. Also, the chart of these two schools look different, western being circular and Vedic circular.

How far is Vedic Astrology scientific?

Like western science of astrology, ancient Indian astrological also relates to Zodiac signs, planets, stars, constellations, galaxies and other celestial entities. According to this science, since Sun is the main mover and Earth and Moon are driven by its energy so all the astrological events are caused by the same energy. This energy plays a major role in sustenance of life on earth so ancient Indian scholar employed energy as an instrument to calculate

  • What amount of energy is received by the Earth at any given time?
  • How much energy is emitted by other planets of the solar system?
  • What amount of energy is lost and destroyed by itself?
