Manic Depression Symptoms

Manic depression symptoms refer to frequent mood swings from a high state to a low state of mind. In medical terms, it is called bipolar disorder which means alternating mood between the poles from mania to a depressed state of mind. There are unusual changes in the person’s mood, energy, and ability to work. This disorder can occur in both men and women though, there is no age limit but, it is generally seen in late adulthood. This disorder can occur in any age group, race, or social class. It might also be a genetic disorder and runs from generation to generation. It does not only affect the sufferer’s life but also their families and friends around him.

Manic depression symptoms have symptoms opposite to each other. There are two types of mood swings, one is extremely high and the other one is extremely low. These mood swings occur frequently in a very mild, moderate, or severe way. There are two types of manic disorders, the first is high or manic which are called episodes and have the following symptoms. The person’s energy level increases and become restless in nature and his ability to work gets higher. There is an excessively high and overly good mood. They are not able to concentrate well, different thoughts come to their mind at the same time, and talk very fast. They get very little sleep and their sexual drive increases. They are not able to judge what is good or bad and unrealistic beliefs creep into their mind. They become aggressive and get extremely irritated

The other type of manic depression symptom is a low or depressive disorder. In this case, the person looks sad, anxious, and empty mood. They get the feeling of pessimism and hopelessness. There is a feeling of guilt, helplessness, and worthlessness. They lose interest in almost all the activities they used to like earlier. They get the feeling of fatigue and get slowed down in all their activities. They become very restless and irritated, they either sleep a lot or cannot sleep at all. There is less appetite and extreme weight loss. They go through chronic pains and get the feeling of suicide. At times they even try to commit suicide.

This disorder can progress from stages to the higher stages leading to other disorders if not treated or misdiagnosed. The manic disorder can rise from mild to a moderate level which is called hypomania at the moderate level and if left untreated it can progress to severe depression. In severe episodes of the disorder symptoms of psychosis which other words is called hallucination or delusion can occur. This order often results in being misdiagnosed as schizophrenia, a mental illness. There is also a state of mixed manic depression when mania and depression occur together. A person having mixed manic depression exhibits the symptom of agitation. They have trouble sleeping and there is a significant change in their appetite. They get the feeling of committing suicide and behave very sad, feeling hopeless about everything but, at the same time getting energized.
